As a parent you need to understand and help your children understand what ‘talent’ is and how they can become good at sport – it’s more of a choice than you might think. This little video covers some of the key areas for understanding talent and crucially tells us that sport and development is a long term process. One thing is clear, current or early sporting performance is not a good indicator of future sporting success.

Talent ID and the 10,000 hour rule

Following on from our recent article on WWPIS on the potential misunderstanding by some parents of the 10,000 hour rule we are delighted to show another video from Dr Ross Tucker who highlights the fact that the vast majority of research suggests it does NOT take this long to become world class.

In this video Ross introduces you to the false dichotomy that was created between talent and training, and how some books have falsely scorched the notion of talent in the name of encouraging people and offering them hope. That’s never a bad thing, of course, but it became counter-productive, for reasons that he’ll explain.

He also critiques the original violin study, and offer up examples who disprove the rule, and share his thoughts on where the message got distorted (deliberately or otherwise).

The benefits of playing multiple sports

With many children playing the same sport all year round and focussing on one sport from such a young age we need to show parents the importance of their children playing multiple sports. This is not always easy for a parent to understand as this level of commitment will obviously bring short term rewards. Please remember though that sport should be a lifetime investment!
