Mobility System Development

by Nino Severino

Perhaps the MOST important aspect of training that beginners generally ignore is that of mobility.

Mobility = Moving with Efficiency

It requires an adequate balance between stability and mobility.

Without sufficient levels of it, you won’t be able to get as strong, be as powerful, get as quick, be as injury resistant, nor get into the right exercise positions.

Not being able to do this severely limits your potential in the two other areas of movement development:

  • Energy System Development
  • Neuromuscular System Development

Being able to move through an adequate range of motion yields some of the following benefits:

  • Greater tissue damage and consequent rebuilding if you’re trying to gain muscle mass
  • More energy expenditure if you’re trying to lose weight
  • More injury resiliency, especially if you plan on doing something high repetition like an endurance sport
  • Reduction of muscle soreness and stiffness
  • Greater/faster recovery from exercise

Not to be confused with flexibility, which is the range of motion a singular joint can go through, mobility is an ever-encompassing term that addresses the whole need for movement within the body.

You will need strength or stability in certain areas while flexibility in others.
